Malaysia's constitution has provisions for local governance. Peninsular Malaysia is governed by the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171), while the states of Sabah and Sarawak are governed by the Local Authorities Ordinance 1996 and the Local Government Ordinance 1961, respectively.

This important document, Volume 1 of a 4-part series on Local Government Laws, offers a thorough understanding of the legislative framework of local government in Malaysia. This book explicitly outlines the various legal principles relating to local authorities, including the right to initiate legal actions both for and against them, the availability of injunctive reliefs against them, the applicability of the doctrines of legitimate expectation and estoppel against them, and much more.

Volume 1 also covers local governments' rights, obligations, and responsibilities under the Strata Management Act 2013 (Act 757), the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), the Statutory and Local Authorities Superannuation Fund Act 1977 (Act 185), and the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Act 154), among other laws.
