Lord Denning was a British barrister and judge who was born Alfred Thompson "Tom" Denning, Baron Denning, OM, PC, DL. He graduated from Oxford University with degrees in mathematics and law, however his studies were interrupted by his duty in the First World War. He subsequently began his legal career as a lawyer, eventually earning a King's Counsel in 1938.

Denning was appointed to the Family Division of the High Court of Justice in 1944, and after less than five years in the High Court, he was promoted to Lord Justice of Appeal in 1948. In 1957, he was appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and in 1962, after five years in the House of Lords, he returned to the Court of Appeal as Master of the Rolls, a position he held for the next twenty years. He continued to contribute thoughts on the condition of the common law by his writing and his seat in the House of Lords after retiring.

Denning was one of the most well-known judges, thanks to his report on the Profumo Affair. He was respected by much of the judiciary, the bar, and the public, and was recognised for his strong decisions that went against the law at the time. Although many of his judgements were reversed by the House of Lords, several of them were confirmed by Parliament, which created statutes in accordance with his judgments, during his 38-year tenure as a judge he made significant modifications to the common law, particularly while in the Court of Appeal. Denning was controversial for his battle against the common law notion of precedent, for statements he made about the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four, and as Master of the Rolls for his disagreements with the House of Lords.

In The Family Story by Lord Denning, Lord denning tells us about his story covering his childhood, youth and of course, the facinating years as a Lord Justice both in the House of Lords and the Court of Appeal.
