Detailed Contents of Merchant Shipping (Oil Pollution) Act 1994 (Act 515):

A Malaysian law called the Merchant Shipping (Oil Pollution) Act 1994 (Act 515) tries to stop and regulate oil pollution from ships in Malaysian waterways. The Act aims to guarantee that ships travelling through Malaysian seas are outfitted with the tools and protocols required to stop and handle oil spills.

A Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP), which is a thorough plan outlining the procedures to be followed in the case of an oil spill, is a requirement under the Act for all ships operating in Malaysian waters. The Act also mandates that ships conduct routine drills to evaluate the efficacy of their SOPEPs.

Additionally, the Act outlines the duties of shipowners, shipmasters, and other parties involved in the transportation of oil. These parties are obligated to take all necessary precautions to avoid oil spills and to make sure that any spills are cleaned up quickly and thoroughly if they do occur.

The Act mandates that in the event of an oil spill, the party at fault must immediately notify the appropriate authorities and take all necessary steps to contain and clean up the incident. If you don't, you'll be punished severely with fines and jail time, among other things.

In addition to the Act, there are rules that offer more information on how the Act is being put into practise. The regulations, which were last modified on January 15, 2017, contain provisions on the methods for reporting oil spills, the specifications for equipment used to respond to oil pollution, and the sanctions for violations of the Act.

The Merchant Shipping (Oil Pollution) Act of 1994 was passed in response to the rising number of oil spills in Malaysian waters, it is important to note. The Act aims to hold responsible parties accountable for any spills that do happen by ensuring that ships operating in Malaysian waters are outfitted with the tools and protocols required to avoid and deal with them.
