Born in Singapore, he received his early education at Catholic High School before pursuing a law degree at University College London. His judicial career began with his appointment as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 1 October 1987. He went on to serve in the judiciary for approximately three decades, from 1987 to 2017, apart from a two-year period between 2006 and 2008 when he served as Attorney-General. Overall, his public service represented approximately fifty years of dedicated service to Singapore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJustice Chao was subsequently appointed a Judge of Appeal on 2 August 1999 and became Vice-President of the Court of Appeal on 18 April 2008.
