In Singapore, contracts involving the sale and purchase of goods are primarily governed by one of two legal frameworks. Domestic transactions and consumer sales generally fall under the Sale of Goods Act (“SOGA”). In contrast, international sales between commercial parties are, subject to certain exceptions, governed by the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (“CISG”), provided that both parties are based in countries that are parties to the Convention. Singapore became a party to the CISG in 1996, and its provisions have since been incorporated into Singapore’s domestic law.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis volume serves as a practical and accessible guide to the law relating to the sale of goods, with particular emphasis on how statutory provisions under SOGA and the CISG differ from the principles of common law. Given the significant distinctions between SOGA and the CISG, the book also seeks to assist lawyers and their clients in determining whether it would be appropriate to exclude the application of the CISG and instead rely on SOGA or the domestic sales legislation of another jurisdiction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe book further examines several areas in which the CISG differs substantially from SOGA and common law principles. In addition, he has been a recurrent Visiting Professor of Law at the Central European University in Budapest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProfessor Hunter is the author of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eModern Law of Contracts\u003c\/em\u003e, a two-volume scholarly work examining the common law of contracts, as well as numerous professional articles and monographs covering commercial law and related areas. He has served on the editorial board of the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eJournal of Contract Law\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eand is a member of the Board of the American Arbitration Association. He is also a Life Member of the American Law Institute and a non-practising member of the Law Society of Singapore. He has been admitted as a member of the State Bar of Georgia since 1971.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProfessor Hunter obtained both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Yale University in the United States.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn recognition of his academic contributions, Professor Pinsler was awarded a Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree in 2004.
