An Act to revise and consolidate the laws relating to local government.

Detailed Contents of Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171):

The framework for local government in Malaysia is established by the Local Government Act of 1976 (Act 171). The Act outlines the creation, management, and funding of local authorities, which are in charge of offering a variety of services to their communities.

According to the Act, it is the duty of local authorities to provide services including rubbish collection, street lighting, upkeep of public parks and structures, and enforcement of local rules. Moreover, local governments are in charge of planning and development within their spheres of influence, including the creation of local plans and the granting of building licences.

The Act calls for the creation of local government councils, whose job it is to supervise how local authorities are run. The councils are made up of appointed members from different areas of the community as well as elected representatives.

In addition to the Act, there are also subsidiary rules that offer more information on how the Act is being put into practise. These rules, which were most recently modified on October 10, 2020, include the selection and responsibilities of local government officials, the authority and obligations of local governments, and the financial administration of local governments.

The regulations also call for the creation of local government funds, which local authorities utilise to fund their operations. The money comes from a number of sources, including municipal taxes and fees, grants from the government, and other sources of income.

In order to create a framework for local administration in Malaysia that is responsive to the needs and goals of local communities, the Local Government Act 1976 was passed. The Act aims to strengthen local democracy and give local governments the capacity to offer their residents top-notch infrastructure and services.
