The Rules of Court 2012 came into force on 1 August 2012, replacing the 1980 Rules of the High Court and the 1980 Subordinate Courts Rules. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had a profound impact on various sectors, including the legal profession, prompting amendments to the rules to address case backlogs and incorporate technology as a permanent aspect of Malaysia’s judicial system.

Key revisions included provisions for remote communication technology in court proceedings, electronic filing of documents, and stricter controls on trial adjournments. Further updates were introduced through the Rules of Court (Amendment) 2023 [PU(A) 229/2023], which took effect on 1 August 2023. These amendments were designed to enhance procedural efficiency and reduce administrative complexities in legal proceedings. A significant change was the revision of the time computation for service, shifting from being "inclusive of the day of such service" to "excluding the day of such service".

This modification directly affects deadlines for defendants to enter an appearance and for plaintiffs to secure a default judgment, ensuring greater clarity and consistency in procedural timelines in line with established legal principles. These rules serve as an essential resource for legal practitioners, offering improved accessibility and ease of reference.
