Why did an ordinary verdict by the Allahabad High Court trigger the declaration of Emergency across India? In what ways did Sanjay Dutt’s arrest under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act influence the law’s trajectory? What unusual chain of events surrounded the debates over the decriminalization of same-sex relationships?

In India, whenever the legislature has indulged in narrow political interests, the judiciary has often acted as the conscience of the nation. Through landmark rulings—striking down Triple Talaq, tackling honour killings, and safeguarding citizens’ rights to identity and expression—the Indian courts have repeatedly set a high standard in prioritizing the rights of the people.

Raising the Bar delves into pivotal cases and judgments that have shaped both the citizenry and the country’s legal landscape. With in-depth analysis by one of India’s leading lawyers, this book is an essential guide to understanding the legal history of modern India.
