The Chief Justice commissioned Ethics and Professional Responsibility: A Code for the Advocate and Solicitor to address the urgent need for such a Code. It provides a practical and extensive explanation of all of the fundamental rules and concepts that regulate an advocate's and solicitor's professional conduct, and it is an excellent and irreplaceable resource for both seasoned practitioners and new law graduates.
Author's Profile:
Jeffrey Pinsler is a law professor at the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Law. Civil justice, civil and criminal evidence, procedure, and ethics are his areas of expertise. He is a barrister-at-law, an advocate and solicitor, a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, a Principal Mediator of the Singapore Mediation Centre, and a member of various professional committees of legal and governmental institutions, including the Singapore Academy of Law and the Supreme Court of Singapore. He has testified before the Court of Appeal as an amicus curiae, and he has spoken at and contributed to conferences and reform programmes in a number of nations. For his services to learning, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) in 2004. He was promoted to Senior Counsel in 2008. In addition, he is a Senior Professorial Fellow at the Singapore Institute of Legal Education.
In the domains of evidence, civil process, and ethics, he is a renowned author. In his position as writer and/or general editor, he has authored 16 major volumes and several articles, many of which are regarded vital references by practitioners and are often cited by courts.
The Honourable Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong personally commissioned Jeffrey to complete this project. The Chief Justice thought it was past time for the legal profession to have a book that would lay out a broad code of professional conduct and explain the underlying principles that guide ethical behaviour in daily practise. Because the project's urgency demanded that it be done as quickly as possible, Jeffrey completed the text in a year.
