About the Authors:

Ahmad Nizam Abbas, Managing Director of Crescent Law Chambers LLC, has played a significant role in the development of Muslim law in Singapore. He participated in the Parliamentary Select Committee hearings on amendments to the Administration of Muslim Law Act in 1998 and chaired the Law Society’s Muslim Law Practice Committee. He helped develop the first Islamic family law module at the Singapore University of Social Services and worked with the National University of Singapore on its Muslim Law Practice Course. He has served on various national boards, including Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura, and currently sits on advisory panels for the Youth Court and the Family Justice Courts. He regularly speaks on the interaction between civil law and Muslim law in Singapore, and his writings have gained international recognition.

Istyana Putri Ibrahim is a Legal Service Officer with the Legal Aid Bureau under the Ministry of Law. Previously a partner at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP, she practised commercial and criminal litigation. Since her call to the Bar in 2011, she has handled numerous complex civil, family, and Syariah divorce matters, including appeals. She now co-leads the Syariah Court Practice Group at LAB and spearheaded the implementation of the Specialist Legal Executive Scheme for Syariah Court cases. She holds an LL.B. (Second Class Upper) from NUS and studied Islamic law under Professor Wael Hallaq during an exchange at McGill University.

Maryam Hasanah Rozlan is currently Legal Counsel at Kaplan Singapore. She previously served at the Ministry of Law and the Legal Aid Bureau, where she advised and represented clients in civil, family, and Muslim law matters. She co-founded and led the Syariah Court Practice Group at LAB and later worked in policy advisory, contributing to legislative reforms in areas such as dispute resolution and insolvency. She holds an LL.B. (Upper Second Class Honours) from the London School of Economics and an LL.M. in Asian Legal Studies from NUS. She has been an associate mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre since 2017 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2020.
