Nani A. Palkhivala: A Life is a detailed biography of Nani Palkhivala, one of India’s most respected jurists and economists.
The book traces the life of Nanabhoy Palkhivala, a staunch defender of civil liberties, an insightful economic commentator, and an iconic legal figure. Author M.V. Kamath presents a well-rounded portrait of Palkhivala, showcasing his many strengths and contributions. A devoted advocate of the Indian Constitution, Palkhivala co-authored The Law and Practice of Income Tax, a foundational work that interprets constitutional principles and offers an extensive analysis of civil rights.
The biography also highlights Palkhivala’s famous, eloquent budget speeches, his recognition by the Indian government for his exceptional legal expertise, and the instances when he represented the nation in international arenas. His acceptance of the ambassadorship to Washington during the Cold War marked a significant service to India. His honesty and professionalism earned him widespread admiration within the corporate sector, particularly during his leadership roles at ACC and various Tata companies.
Drawing on interviews, letters, and diverse archival material, the book is the result of Kamath’s meticulous research. In addition to recounting major moments from Palkhivala’s life, it also places these events within the broader context of Indian history.
First published in paperback by Hay House in 2012, Nani A. Palkhivala: A Life offers an in-depth and well-documented account of one of India’s greatest legal minds.
