Marriage, Spouses and Assets by Leong Wai Kum | 2025*

This monograph examines the formation of non-Muslim marriages and the legal framework governing various aspects of the marital relationship, including divorce and the division of matrimonial assets. Each topic is addressed in an integrated manner to provide a coherent understanding of the law. The primary legislation discussed is the Women’s Charter 1961 (2020 Rev Ed). Since its revision, the legal framework has undergone significant changes through the Women’s Charter (Amendment) Act 2022 (Act 3 of 2022), the Family Justice Reform Act 2023 (Act 18 of 2023), and the Women’s Charter (Family Violence and Other Matters) (Amendment) Act 2023 (Act 21 of 2023). In addition, the Family Justice (General) Rules 2024, the Family Justice Courts Practice Directions 2024, updated court forms, and the Family Justice Courts’ Therapeutic Justice Model 2024 came into effect in October 2024. This monograph explores the underlying legal theories, substantive principles, and selected procedural rules to provide a comprehensive overview of the law and demonstrate how these principles are effectively implemented by the Family Justice Courts in Singapore.
