First released two years ago, this book was widely appreciated across different sections of the legal community. It has now been extensively revised and brought up to date. The original edition was organized into three parts, addressing Supreme Court decisions relating to marriage and divorce, children and minors, and property and succession. In the present edition, additional material has been incorporated into both the main text and the endnotes across all three parts.
This edition also introduces a new Supplement following Part III, which examines eight recent cases from 2022–23. Among these are three significant matters concerning women’s rights that are currently pending before the Court and are expected to be decided in the near future.
From its earliest years, the Supreme Court has adjudicated cases involving the religious beliefs and practices of Muslims, an area not covered in the first edition. To address this, a newly added Part IV offers brief analyses of nine selected cases of this nature, beginning with the 1958 cow protection case and concluding with the 2022 Hijab case. Notably, the first three of these matters were decided by Constitution Benches.
While the first edition examined 61 cases, the present edition expands this number to 78. Numerous additional cases, both past and recent, have also been referenced in the endnotes throughout the book.
