Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716)
Wildlife Conservation Act 2010
(Act 716)
The Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) is a key piece of Malaysian legislation enacted to provide comprehensive protection and management of wildlife and their habitats. It came into force on 28 December 2010, replacing the older Protection of Wildlife Act 1972 (Act 76), with the aim of modernising and strengthening Malaysia’s wildlife conservation framework.
The Act regulates the conservation, protection, and sustainable use of wildlife, including the control of hunting, possession, trade, and breeding of wildlife species. It establishes clear provisions for the designation of wildlife sanctuaries and conservation areas, the licensing and permitting system for activities involving wildlife, and the protection of endangered species in line with Malaysia’s commitments under international conventions such as CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
Enforcement powers are vested in the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), whose officers are authorised to investigate offences, seize illegal specimens, and prosecute offenders. The Act also introduces heavier penalties for wildlife-related crimes, including illegal hunting, possession, or trade of protected species.
Overall, the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 represents Malaysia’s strong commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem protection, and the sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife.
