This book is designed as a practical guide rather than a comprehensive legal textbook, focusing on an in-depth examination of selected areas of civil litigation. Each chapter begins with an overview of its scope and the legal issues covered, followed by detailed discussions of the relevant laws, key judicial decisions, procedural requirements, and significant practical considerations. To enhance understanding, the book also includes practical guidance, chapter-end Pro-Tips, and summary tables and charts that simplify complex legal concepts.

The content is arranged in the chronological order of the civil litigation process. It starts with the fundamentals of causes of action and pleadings, before covering key topics such as amendments to pleadings, document classification and service, witness management, and civil appeals. It also addresses specialised areas, including producing prisoners as witnesses, proceedings involving persons with mental disabilities, and circumstances where solicitors may affirm affidavits on behalf of clients.

Intended for a wide audience—including law students, pupils-in-chambers, junior lawyers, and experienced practitioners seeking a quick reference—the book explains essential legal principles in clear terms while citing leading cases to support further research. By combining practical insights with foundational legal knowledge, it aims to help readers navigate civil litigation more efficiently and reduce the time spent on legal research.
